Marie Tillman is the wife of Corporal Pat Tillman, a former NFL football player who was killed serving in Afghanistan in 2004. Marie and Pat’s family and friends created the Pat Tillman Foundation following his death in 2004. The Foundation's goal and mission is to carry forward Pat's legacy by inspiring people to make positive changes in themselves and in the world around them. One of the ways in which the Foundation does this is through the Leadership Through Action program at the University of Arizona. This program seeks to enhance young people's leadership skills and helps them use their skills to develop solutions to today's problems. Alex Garwood, a close friend of Pat and Marie Tillman, is the executive director of the Pat Tillman Foundation.

Marie Tillman is co-founder and president of the Pat Tillman Foundation, a national leader in providing resources and educational scholarship support to veterans, active service members and their spouses. Tillman lost her husband Pat, a U.S. Army Ranger and former NFL star, in April 2004 when he was killed in action in Afghanistan.  Five years after making her first public appearance at the Clinton School, Marie discusses her work with the Pat Tillman Foundation and her new book, “The Letter: My Journey Through Love, Loss and Life,” which describes her journey to remake her life following Pat’s death.
